Civil War Centers

Students are rotating through a variety of exploration centers focused on the Civil War. Students will investigate the reasons for the civil war, the different economies of the north and south, the geography of the war, and the leaders of the war.  Over two weeks, students will read, listen and touch replica artifacts from the 1860's!

Building background knowledge and historical context for the Civil War

Students are buddy reading and responding to a variety of texts that are pertinent and conversation starters for challenges in the mid-1800's.
Using these books, students, rotated through one book each day, where they will end up reading four picture books.

Students read the text, took notes, looked up new words, and recorded definitions of new words.

Closing out 2017

Lots of activities kept us busy at the end of 2017! Here is a snapshot into our final days.  Here are the fifth graders singing at the Winter Open House:

After singing and having our families in our room afterward, students had some time to play some games with friends.

Students are enjoying our assembly on RESPECT.

Finishing the day with the Winter Party!

What is Matter?

Students are beginning to think about what matter means. Matter has more than one meaning.  What does it mean when we put it into a scientific context?  Students are working as a group to sort picture cards based on what they think are examples of matter and not matter. We are at the beginning of this unit, therefore, we would not expect students to sort with 100% accuracy! We are working towards defining what is matter? How do you know if something is matter?

Do you agree or disagree with their groupings?
